This process is known as the ABCEF theory of personality where:
(A) - The activating event or stimulus, paired with the
(B) - Belief about the activating event, causes a
(C) - Consequence (The emotional and behavioral response)
(D) - Is the disputing intervention that is introduced to change the (B) Belief. After which a new
(E) - Effect (More appropriate Belief) becomes associated with the original (A) Activating event.
(F) - Lastly Forward progress that ignites new feelings which are associated with the new beliefs about ourselves, through homework and repetition.
Yet, there are times when our emotional reactions seem out of sync with reality. We find ourselves plagued by anxiety without a discernible cause. Trivial matters ignite furious anger within us. Even in moments that should bring us joy, we feel a sense of sadness that defies explanation.
What transpires is a pattern of faulty thinking that has taken root in our minds. Unbeknownst to us, our brains have learned to interpret situations through a negative lens, distorting our perceptions and judgments.
Unconscious irrational beliefs have stealthily woven their way into our perspectives, influencing our thoughts about ourselves and the world. Our brains, ever vigilant in their quest to protect us, have unwittingly fallen prey to the programming of external influences throughout our life's journey.

Emotions and feelings, in essence, transcend the notions of right and wrong, accuracy and falsehood. They are the exquisite responses of our bodies to the patterns of our thoughts. Constantly, our beliefs and unconscious ruminations operate on autopilot, giving birth to emotions within us.
It is no wonder that at times we find ourselves bewildered, unable to decipher the origin of our feelings.
Consider this illustrative example highlighting the impartial nature of emotions - they are mere reflections of our thoughts.
Picture something you fervently desire but lack. Perhaps, not having it stirs feelings of unhappiness within you. Yet, the truth is far more nuanced. It is not the absence of this desire that causes your sorrow; rather, it is the very thought of lacking it. Allow me to substantiate this assertion:
Have you ever experienced happiness despite not possessing the coveted object? __Yes __No?
If you were devoid of it but harbored indifference towards its absence, could you still feel unhappy? __Yes __No?
Now, envisage a scenario where you engage in an activity that fully engrosses your attention - say, hurtling down a roller coaster. Would the absence of your desire torment you then? No.
You see, it is not the absence of what you yearn for that generates distress within you. It is the constant ruminations and fixations on its absence that take their toll on your emotional state.
At times, our unconscious mind and senses keenly perceive cues from our surroundings, triggering emotional responses. A mere glance at someone's body language or facial expression can elicit an automatic physiological reaction, while the slightest hint of danger can evoke an instinctual fear response.
However, more often than not, it is not the external world or the unfolding situation itself that gives rise to our emotional reactions—it is our thoughts.
It is through the lens of our mental filter, our interpretation, that the situation undergoes transformation, subsequently provoking our emotional response. This interplay can be summarized as follows:
Situation - Interpretation (Thought) - Emotion.
Crucially, decades of research in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) have provided substantial evidence that we possess the power to influence our thoughts. If we can exert control over our thoughts, we can thereby regulate our emotions. While this endeavor may present challenges, it is a learnable skill. Let us delve into the process:
Recognize Emotion: Begin by acknowledging the emotion you are experiencing.
Identify Thought: Probe into the underlying thought that triggered the emotional response.
Change Thought: Engage in the deliberate act of modifying the thought, introducing a more constructive perspective or challenging any irrational beliefs.
Change Emotion: Witness how altering the thought pattern subsequently affects and transforms the accompanying emotion.
By embracing this process, we unlock the potential to shape our emotional landscape, fostering greater emotional intelligence and well-being.

Once a thought comes into your awareness, it becomes conscious, empowering you to take charge.
With this newfound awareness, you hold the ability to deliberately alter that thought. While your mind instinctively interprets situations, your conscious attention allows you to opt for a different perspective, a fresh outlook.
This realization brings forth tremendous prospects, for when you change the lens through which you perceive things, the very nature of those things begins to shift. Even within the same circumstances or with identical facts, altering your viewpoint inevitably transforms your experience of the situation.
Consider this example: A man visited a friend's house and, craving tea, sought a kettle but found none. Instead, he poured water into a glass coffee carafe and placed it on the gas stove. Moments later, he caught a whiff of something burning. Returning to the kitchen, he discovered the handle of the carafe had caught fire. Swiftly extinguishing it, he felt a mix of embarrassment and guilt. Surprisingly, his friend responded with laughter, commending his "fireman" skills.
Identical circumstances, divergent perspectives—resulting in entirely different emotional responses.
Now, why does this matter?
It matters because, undoubtedly, you yearn to experience a sense of improvement. By shifting your perspective on a situation, you inevitably alter your emotional reaction to it. Yet, there's an added bonus!
You see, emotions serve as the impetus behind your actions, influencing the decisions you make.
As you grow more proficient in recognizing your emotions and honing your thought processes, you gain the capacity to make choices from a position of control. You might still experience certain emotions, but your cognitive faculties will guide you towards rational decision-making.
However, if you find yourself resonating with the majority, you might not yet be consistently in that state of mastery. And that's where we find ourselves at present.
Thought - Emotion - Decisions - Action/Behaviors
The thoughts you harbor directly shape the behaviors you display and the actions you undertake. Thus, if you find yourself engaging in behaviors you find undesirable or regrettable, it is your thoughts that bear responsibility.
If you haven't yet discerned the behaviors or actions that fail to serve your best interests, cast your gaze upon the outcomes you are currently experiencing in life.
Are you facing challenges at work or encountering difficulties in your relationships? Have unpleasant experiences become recurrent? Do unfulfilled desires persist?
Conversely, consider the positive aspects of your existence - those elements you have successfully cultivated, cherish, and find joy in.
Reflecting upon these areas is crucial as it lays the foundation for the next step in our exploration of cause and effect.
Thought - Emotion - Decisions - Action/Behaviors - Results/Outcomes
Your Behaviors and Actions Shape the Results and Outcomes of Your Life. Indeed, your behaviors and actions serve as the fundamental determinants of the outcomes and results you encounter in your life—both the desired ones and the undesired ones.
Through the transformation of your thoughts, you hold the power to bring about a profound metamorphosis in your very existence.
This is not a mere metaphorical shift; it is a literal transformation.
Now, let us delve deeper into comprehending the workings of thought.
Here's a truth we must confront: Every single one of us engages in irrational thinking. Yes, even you.
It is relatively effortless to discern when someone else is caught in the grasp of irrationality. Their words may sound illogical, devoid of sense. Even if we attempt to enlighten them to their flawed thinking, they remain impervious. It seems as though they are steadfastly entrenched in their own perspective, blinded to the truth. Undoubtedly, such situations can be exasperating.
Yet, here's the revelation—we, too, are susceptible to this very phenomenon. There are moments when we all become ensnared in a state of cognitive blindness. Why does this occur? It stems from the innate functioning of our minds.
At its core, your brain is wired with an unwavering objective - to ensure your safety.
Consequently, it diligently focuses on evaluating the present circumstances while predicting the future. However, in the process of interpreting the world around you, it becomes remarkably easy to misperceive or misunderstand the unfolding situations or the words spoken by others.
Within every moment, you find yourself immersed in a realm of constrained knowledge. The limitations arise from two primary factors that hinder your comprehensive understanding.
Firstly, the sheer nature of reality implies that you may simply lack access to all the facts.
Consider a scenario where you hear a sudden loud bang outside—a fragmented sound without visual context.
In such instances, it is natural to make assumptions, mistaking a car door for a gunshot.
Similarly, when your friend's tone sounds irritated, you might assume their anger is directed at you, oblivious to the possibility of external circumstances that might have influenced their mood.
Secondly, your brain selectively filters out the majority of information present in your surroundings.
This mechanism arises from the necessity to cope with the overwhelming volume of stimuli bombarding your senses continuously. Imagine consciously perceiving every single detail and data point simultaneously—it would be an overwhelming experience.
To prevent sensory overload, your brain employs a focusing mechanism known as the Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS sifts through the multitude of incoming information, distilling it down to approximately 2,000 relevant bits tailored to your individual needs.
Hence, depending on your current focus or mindset, your brain selectively hones in on data aligned with that particular subject.
For instance, if you engage in a conversation about your sister's baby while traversing an airport terminal, your attention becomes attuned to the cries of infants surrounding you. Conversely, when dressed in formal attire en route to a crucial meeting, you become acutely aware of fellow individuals similarly dressed, as they exude an aura of importance.
Yet, it is vital to recognize that this very filtering process renders your perception incomplete, as your brain effectively blocks out a vast majority of stimuli, leaving you with a fragmented picture of reality.
When we delve into the realm of irrational thinking, we encounter a crucial concern - its potential to become problematic and inflict adverse consequences on our existence.
It is within this context that we refer to instances where such thinking hampers an individual's ability to function and attain their goals.
The ramifications can be profound, giving rise to extreme emotional reactions that drive behaviors detrimental to oneself, others, or the opportunities life presents. Distorting reality, irrational thoughts ignore or dismiss factual information, impeding rational decision-making and hindering comprehension of unfolding events.
Consequently, the consequences of this distortion reverberate in our lives, leading to harmful judgments and evaluations of both ourselves and others, as well as our perception of the world. It becomes evident that irrational thoughts are inherently self-defeating, casting a shadow of negativity upon our lives.
Without acquiring the skills to identify and challenge these patterns of thinking, we remain susceptible to perpetual self-judgment and the judgment of others. Our ability to grasp transformative truths that could revolutionize our lives becomes obscured.
Emotional disturbances rooted in irrational thinking persist, causing harm and hindering our progress. Ultimately, we find ourselves confined, unable to fully embrace our potential and live the life we yearn for.
To understand the connection between their irrational beliefs and their present problem.
The therapist aims to expose the irrational and self-destructive beliefs and to challenge their value to the client.
For example, if a client thinks that they need the approval of everyone around them, then the REBT therapist will identify this belief and dispute the client’s reasons for holding this belief.
Once exposed, the therapist and client can then work towards identifying more appropriate and rational beliefs. From these beliefs it is hoped that new feelings and thoughts will arise for the client.
The methods involved in REBT include:
Disputing irrational beliefs in a systematic and logical way.
Changing one’s language from shoulds, oughts and musts to preferences.
Using humor to reduce the exaggerated effects of irrational thoughts and beliefs.
Doing cognitive homework to identify absolutistic beliefs behind your problem. This can include assignments to observe your self-fulfilling prophecies, reading self-help books and listening to tapes of earlier counseling sessions to critique your original self-defeating beliefs.
Using modeling and role play in the session to encourage the client’s use of more rational thoughts and beliefs.
